Reverend Fryer looks a lot like Ed Begley. I had to do a double take in that first picture.

B.A. Lampman's avatar

I was going to write the same thing 😅

Anne Kadet's avatar

I had to look up EB but you're right, Justin!

Given that one of my goals in life is to be out of the public eye, I guess it’s a good thing I am unable to grow a mullet. Would love to hear a conversation between Zay and Reverend Fryer.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Oh I love that idea Rob. I wonder if they'd be up for it, and what they'd talk about?

Glencora's avatar

The Doctrine of Indulgences & personal branding, I guess?

Anne Kadet's avatar

Good one, Glencora!

One of the great things about your interviews are your questions, Anne. They show that you listen, and are intuitive.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Thanks Jessica! I feel grateful that I get to work at a job which mainly involves listening and asking questions bc I love both so much!

Beth T (BethOfAus)'s avatar

Loved the articles about you! That lovely (noisy) little apartment, and your clothing choices. And thanks for introducing us to two more fascinating New Yorkers, one so young and one so wise. Wishing them both good lives. Thanks Anne. Sending hugs.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Oh I'm glad you enjoyed the articles about me, Beth and the interviews with Zaiden and Pastor Gregory. I got a kick out of the age difference too.

Toni Brayer's avatar

That reverend is awesome. I agree there should be one on every corner. People need connection. That’s why your newsletter is so good too.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Thanks Toni. Now I am thinking I could set one up in front of my meditation center!

What a great human! My gosh.....empathy, kindness and compassion....the greatest traits a human can have!!! And I love Phil's quote lol....Cafe Anne does it again!!!!! Absolutely chicken soup for the soul!

Anne Kadet's avatar

Aww thank you Alexis. So glad you enjoyed!

Great interviews. I wonder why Fleming was banned from TikTok. With 100k followers he could have partnered with fashion brands.

Lutheran Lucy. 👏👏 If he went online he’d go viral.

Anne Kadet's avatar

It seemed as though Mr. Fleming was not sure why he was banned, CK. It's definitely a thing where folks get banned on social media and never find out why.

And yes, our Lutheran Lucy is great. Maybe he should go on Tik Tok too.

Good people, great reading, as always, Anne.

But the pressing question is: Who is Phil Kadet Jr?

Anne Kadet's avatar

Thank you Drew!

And Phil Kadet Jr. is my wonderful little brother!

https://www.philkadet.com/

Michele Linehan's avatar

Anne, talent runs in your family! Loved the article.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Thanks Michele! My brother is an amazing pianist and composer. I am NOT biased.

Therry Neilsen-Steinhardt's avatar

Anne! You never asked me if I were related to the Steinhardt in NYU STEINHARDT, which I just found out about because I checked out your little brother! The simple answer is NO, our family is not related to the famous Steinhardts who have enough money to give NYU and get a school of Culture, Education and Human Development. We were simple tanners in Newark.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Well Therry, I've been wondering all these years but did not dare ask! Thank you for clarifying. Now I will stop mailing you my grant proposals.

Therry Neilsen-Steinhardt's avatar

But Anne! I grant them ALL! They just never have any money associated with them!

Push Pull Carry's avatar

A wise man. :)

As much as I loved your contrasting interviews and the suggestion that you should try to sit the Reverend Fryer and Zay down together, it was the Nesting post story which caught my attention and you loving chores. It is a pleasure we share and, by chance, I did a post of my own recently about re-reading ‘A House Unlocked’ by one of my favourite English authors, Penelope Lively, in which she wrote about why, as a writer, she enjoyed chores, especially washing up. The reason being that it was one of the few things she started each day that she knew she would finish, and that gave her great satisfaction. Another book I am very fond of and am looking at right now is ‘living large in small spaces’ by Marissa Bartolucci published in 2003 is made up of photographs and interviews with people living in American city apartments ranging in size from 100 sq. ft. - 1,000 sq. ft. and two of 300 sq. ft. apartments are in Manhattan. I don’t know how much you want to give away about your home, but to have a look at your favourite window view would be interesting, given you kind of opened a window by giving your Q & A interview to Nesting. Great stuff as always.🐰

Anne Kadet's avatar

I have not given it much thought OLOBAKAK, but I think Ms. Lively for sure made a good point about dishes and stuff being a thing you can do and finish and take some satisfaction in. I think I will make more of a point of enjoying that sense of satisfaction going forward.

And that is weird, that anyone would consider 1000 square feet a small space. I think here in NYC anything over 500 counts as medium.

And here's my window view! It's very nice!

Having trees to look at is one of life’s great pleasures. The trees you see soften everything. Thanks for sharing.🐰

I remember an interview with Gregory Hines where he mentioned that he felt at peace when he had the laundry going.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Laundry = peace

Dishes = peace

But the all time tops is SWEEPING.

ThinkPieceofPie's avatar

100% agree.

I also like mopping. Recently bought a fancypants new vacuum, and whoa, it's been a game changer.

Kara J. Buller's avatar

Oh interesting! He's affiliated with the NALC - North American Lutheran Church. I was raised ELCA Lutheran (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America). (Some consider the ELCA too "Che Guevara" for their taste.) I would go see him but I would NOT bring up this very controversial division within the Lutheran church. I am half-kidding. Update: I have now learned there are at least 40 different Lutheran denominations in North America. This is fascinating to me! So many different flavors. Anyway, thank you for these wonderful interviews with cool New Yorkers!

Anne Kadet's avatar

I am sort of aware of the Lutheran schism, Kara. I know one is conservative and the other more liberal but I don't know which is which, and no I certainly did not want to bring it up with him. It does not sound like much fun.

And wow, 40 Lutheran denominations. Enjoy your rabbit hole!

Just had a chance to read Cafe Anne 915; sorry; it’s great as usual!

“My favorite second home is my inner world. It is vast and populated with all kinds of crazy creatures, and I can get there without leaving my apartment.” I hope JRB is one of those crazy creatures; I mean, I act crazy enough. My comments are analogous to pulling your pigtails; if you had any…

. “My job is exciting. I find the city and all the people I meet very exciting. I feel like my life is full of adventure, so I don't need to be adventurous in my wardrobe,” she says. “If I had a boring life, I might need more interesting clothing.” Well-said!!

“....I don't have to worry about what to wear,” Anne says. “I'm like a cop or a nun or a Catholic school girl. I don't have a choice—ever.”

Well-played again! But I must say that my 1st, and really most passionate romance, at 16, was with a Catholic Schoolgirl….I loved the uniform!!

“I'm a Leo. I love the attention. I love being a unique person. I never try to play the victim or be upset about it. I know what my appearance invites.” A person who accepts being an iconoclast, like ME! AND, we are both Leo’s (Aug 17th ‘53). I had a huge fro (from a permanent) in college; the only issue was that I spent a lot of time with my “pic” trying to get it even all around. Zane, you have a great style going. ZaneTheCool

“....His tongue-in-cheek offer, inspired by the Peanuts comic strip: "SPIRITUAL HELP 5¢" That’s so great!!

“I look at everyone who passes, every passerby. I look at them and try to imagine their life. I try to look at them with sympathy and compassion and admiration.” You know, I do that too and it can be a difficult load; I see a person and I wish them all the good luck the Universe can grant them in the existence. They may be an angel or a devil, they just have a look about them that makes me want to recognize them, like you would recognize a star; because they are invisible to most people.

Some of the questions are much easier: "How do I get to the Guggenheim?" Now that really made me LOL!

“The young people don't know Peanuts?!?!” NO THEY DON”T! My sis-in-law teaches elementary school and she had a “Snoopy” themed, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving party in class with “toast.” And not one student knew who Snoopy was. Wait until I show her this!

“How do you come up with the right questions when all you have are answers?” Which brings up my discovery that to use A. I. productively, you have to come up with the right questions and then use A. I.’s answer to come up with more questions, continue that in a loop and then you have power.

Anne Kadet's avatar

1. I'm sorry JRB, but as crazy as you may be, you are hardly original in being a fellow who admires the Catholic school girl uniform.

2. I love knowing you had an Afro by-way-of perm back in college.

3. Okay, I am sort of understanding that kids don't recognize Lucy and her advice booth. But SNOOPY???????

JudgeRoyBean's avatar

PS about the Afro, I met my 1st wife in a bar before Spring Break, got her number to call her for a date when I returned; when we met that night at the bar I had a HUGE Afro that I got cut off during break; so when I arrived for the date, she was either pleasantly surprised or vaguely disappointed; I was a cool-dude back in 1976; Afro and Bibs!!

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1H0dR8xAYlvw0WrRYIuWv3892KFCo824i?usp=sharing

As for Zane, he should change his moniker to "ZaneTheMane."

JudgeRoyBean's avatar

You know, my sister-in-law was here today and I told her about the Pastor's "Lucy Advice" booth in NYC and how few people knew about Peanuts. AND SNOOPY!! You know, Snoopy still appears in quite a few TV commercials; maybe Madison Avenue hasn't got the word yet?

As for the school uniforms it must be some atavistic trait from the Neanderthal days?

Personally, my teenage exploratory romance was a watershed event that stamped the uniform into my teenage brain; which as we all know, does not exist in teenage boyz

Emily Groveman's avatar

This was amazing! 1.) Zaiden is the coolest person I've never met! 2.) Lucy's last name is VAN PELT?! 3.) Anne, you totally need to do a 5¢ advice booth!

Anne Kadet's avatar

You are the second person to suggest that Emily! But I was sort of thinking we could maybe do a booth for you-know-what at the thing-a-ling. Discuss!

Emily Groveman's avatar

YES, the thing-a-ling!!

Eden's avatar

A Cafe Anne booth would be pretty cool actually...

Anne Kadet's avatar

OMG I love this idea Eden. I AM planning a little project where I try being a sidewalk vendor for a day. Maybe I shall vend some words.

Jenn Kashiwa's avatar

Just saw the Reverend on the IG account What Is New York and I totally thought he would be in Brooklyn! Pleasantly surprised he’s in my neighborhood. I might pay him a visit! Thank you Anne!!!!

Anne Kadet's avatar

I think that's where I spotted him too, Jenn! I hope you pay him a visit. He's a delight.

Justin Difazzio's avatar

I want to do the same thing the reverend is doing, but with Tarot readings.

Anne Kadet's avatar

There'd a line around the block, Justin!

Justin Difazzio's avatar

I could make DOLLARS worth of nickels!

Lynn Mason's avatar

Love the pastor and his 5-cent booth!! I will share this with the pastor of my church.

I always wanted to go set up a booth on my college camps and have a sign that said - ask me what the best thing I did when I was in college? The answer: I quit smoking.

Anne Kadet's avatar

Glad you're sharing with your pastor, Lynn. I'm going to share with my meditation center!
