I love how these stories just fall in your lap. The universe knows you’re always on the lookout.
Great that Uriel is happy as a nomad. Sad for his kids. And BTW as long as you drink alcohol and smoke weed you are not cleansed. 🤣 But Uriel has his own definitions that work well for him.
I asked him about his drinking, smoking and smoking, of course, CK. He said most people can't handle alcohol because they are channeling the wrong spirit, but he is different, etc.
You are a consummate storyteller Anne. The artifice we can create in our minds to explain something in an utterly absurd way is a gift and a curse I suppose. If we only spend time with ourselves (or a fashioned social media feed nowadays), I assume we are doomed to get distorted into something quite unlikely and certainly inconsistent. When someone tells me "you gotta listen to X", I am overwhelmed to throw them a lifeline. I love all of your writing. I will send you a OTG soon. The takeaway from today is "But the walking tale made for a good story—one he likely believes." -- a person committed to the craft of writing is wedded to the em dash :)
Spending time with Uriel made me look a bit at the stories I might be telling myself about myself, Mr. Dolan. Of course, I did not want to look TOO hard...
When I read the story, especially when Uriel expanded on his philosophy I did do some of the same short analysis Anne. While I doubt it will encourage you to squander the time, there was a show on Amazon Prime years ago. It was titled Lucifer. It was a comedic story about angels and demons prowling the earth. The portrayal of Uriel by Michael Imperioli was fantastic and hilarious. It was a great take on good and evil and our silly projections about them.
Shout out to the marketplace. Some bright person at a medical supply company realized those cyanoacrylate ester tubes that are 2/$1 at the Dollar Store (that's Super glue) should just be rebranded as Dermabond for $225 - $650 for 12 single-use tubes. I sense an opportunity. As a Minnesotan we are sure our hometown hero United Health Care has figured this out :) This is probably a better markup than bandages :)
Yes. I have family involved in sports medicine. Super glue took over for wound mending long ago and is awesome. They shared a couple of single use packs years ago. Usually better than stitching. The great thing is they just called it DermaBond as if they were inventing something. The chemistry nerd in me just happens to know that all of these adhesives are just a class of chemicals called esters. Here's a fun one for ya. Whenever you eat some artificial fruit flavor it is likely an ester. The simplest of the esters to make are the chemical that gives banana their characteristic smell. I would wager that banana planks contain an ester for the long-time loyal Cafe Anne readers. If you ever use super glue, you will note a subtle sweet smell. It's just chemistry :)
If you look up cyanoacrylate ester on the interwebs will take you down the rabbit hole. Maybe your guest this week who visited a tattoo parlor might consider the same thing that intrigues a lot of youth to get the chemical formula for caffeine as memorable body art. He might consider doing something similar with super glue. It would look cool I think and it saved the day for him.
If you follow the link, just imagine how cool that might look on someone's forearm?
Following your link and then considering the chemical compound diagram next led me to wonder what is the name of the diagrams that illustrate how a chemical is organized. Which I found out. And now I am wondering if you know this off the top of your head!
Truth be told I don't remember them having a specific name Anne. I did look it up but the name I found was not an oh yeah moment. The joke in engineering school was organic chemistry would help you decide whether chemical engineering was for you. Memorize the stupid formulas and learn how to draw them -- ugh. Once you got further along, thermodynamics would be the next time you might pivot again to something else. If you make it that far, you get to mass transfer and learn how to separate things and make cool stuff like alcohol :) For a youngster in college, that seemed kinda cool -- haha.
I do remember an organic chemistry lab from WAY BACK when. We made a set of esters. I remember one smelled like bananas and others smelled like strawberries and pineapples. I often think about that when I am eating fresh fruit :)
Whenever I see kids with chemical formulas as tattoos I smile. Once in a while I will ask them what it is a formula for if unsure.
And Uriel "randomly" walked in the Brooklyn center.....this guy would make an emanation want to be more of an emanation. And I agree with CK, it is amazing how these amazing beings just fall into your lap! My favorite part of Uriel is that he doesn't sleep in homeless shelters, so he doesn't take up someone's bed......my gosh, what a jewel! Thank you, Cafe ANNE! You've raised my spirits to the celestial skies, once again!
Thank you Alexis! The story I was PLANNING on for this week was spending a day in a massage chair at the Staten Island Mall. But this was even better. And the mall will always be there!
Thank you for this great story. You just got one more paid subscriber.
When I go to NYC, typically one or two times/year, I stay with a friend whose place in Park Slope is about a 5 minute walk from Purity Diner. Last year I wrote an essay about a stroll I took on the same section of Seventh Ave that you walked with Uriel to kill time when I found myself locked out of my friend's apartment. The essay, "Walking in Brooklyn with Paul Auster, Bishop Berkley, and the ghost of Trofim Lysenko" rambles all over the place, but the section about 7th Ave is here: https://johnsundman.substack.com/i/159219393/paul-auster-finds-me-locked-out-in-brooklyn
Politics Alert Mixed w/ Satire -- If the PDB had to be pruned to include more charts, it is highly unlikely Orangina is reading much on Substack. I think we are safe and can hide in plain sight as long as it involves reading for comprehension anyhow :)
Such a strange amalgamation of unsettling, uplifting, intriguing. Winter in your part of the world is such a bitter thing. I’m glad he’s taking care of himself well enough. The motherly part of me worries about him, but he’s clearly got the gift of the gab, so hopefully he can stay well enough.
I love your comment ‘The most interesting thing to me, Justin, is given the five-hour transcript I came away with after our walk, I could have told five different stories about five different people. So why did I tell the version I told? Is it the most accurate version? The best? I will never know!’ There are so many different ways to look at things! I do appreciate this version Anne. A good read. Thank you.
Anne, you really need to read Elif Shafak’s post yesterday about the ‘heteronyms to Fernando Pesso.’ Your ‘find’ may well be a present day Pesso! You could write five different stories about anyone. You are that kind of writer. In two words, Bloody Brilliant.’ You did not write about ‘Uriel’ in five minutes. I doubt, consummate professional that you are, you did not do in a day. It maybe is that with your subscription rate you are underselling yourself and need to increase it! I will pay you £6 a month instead of £4 and challenge others to join me, because I love your ‘Open to anyone for free’ policy as well as your love of people, especially those with a few quirks. Monday is a good day on substack with you and Sandra de Helen to look forward to. Take care.🐰
And it's true, the Uriel story took a bit longer to write than most.
The subscription rate is a tricky thing. I'm sure there are many who would happily pay more, and raising the rate by $1 would be a big boost for me. But there are also many who find the current rate a stretch!
Introduce an ‘open’ subscription. We pay what we can and no distinction between someone who gives $100 and someone who gives $1. I applaud your thinking, but if you run the risk of not being able to continue then maybe you should consider asking those of us who are on your side to pay what we can, even if just $1 a month. Those $1 could add up and surprise you! It may get you some useful publicity too!! 🐰
I would LOVE to do that! Unfortunately, Substack does not allow monthly subscriptions under $5, unless its a special discount offer. But you are giving me some ideas. There has to be a way to make this work! I KNOW the support is there if I can just figure out a way to unlock it.
Ah, how about $5 buying a three month subscription, or even two months? Will substack allow quarterly direct debits or do they have to be monthly? They allow one offs. How about those who pay $5 monthly/quarterly go into a draw for one your branded items with one winner for every ‘x’ subscribers. ‘More Cafe Anne patrons means more prizes’ every quarter, e.g. November (in time for Christmas) etc etc. I am sure you must have many more entrepreneurial patrons than an old octogenarian socialist like me, who would like to have Cafe Anne on their C.V. as an example of how they helped you make the big time whilst still being in there 100% for everyone. Enough! Enjoy what remains of the week. Regards🐰
Three things. 1.) Great storytelling, as usual.; 2.) I am somewhat new-ish here, why is your "friend" Aharon always in quotation marks?; 3.) I have to agree with another commenter that I feel so sad for his kids. I can't imagine just up and leaving my kids like this, no matter how terribly the marriage ended. I am going through a divorce now, my soon-to-be-ex-wife and I are sharing custody 50/50, and this is the first full day without my son, and even though he is at school right now and I wouldn't be seeing him right now anyway, it is KILLING me knowing I won't see him after school.
3) Yes it is sad! And from the little he told me its a complicated story. He might not have much access to his kids even if he'd stuck around. I know we all hope the situation can change, as does Uriel.
Professional grifter, spiritual teacher, surfer of cosmic waves...the lines are pretty hazy sometimes. But it sounds like Uriel is happy and wants to make other people happy. I'm down with that.
The most interesting thing to me, Justin, is given the five-hour transcript I came away with after our walk, I could have told five different stories about five different people. So why did I tell the version I told? Is it the most accurate version? The best? I will never know!
I can imagine he would fill volumes! Whatever story you ended up telling, it's fascinating to know such a complex and unorthodox dude is out there wandering around.
I was surprised when I watched his TikToks because he is far more personable in person, Lindsey. That said yes it's always sad when someone is estranged from their family.
I believe that he sort of takes donations from individuals and soup kitchens and pantries, and then redistributes them to other individuals, soup kitchens and pantries, Eden. So the butternut squash probably plays into that scenerio somehow.
My favorite item in his backpack was the mini Bluetooth speaker (busted). (I sang it along to the line in Love Shack when she says, “tiiiin roof…rusted” 🤣).
It intrigued me…why hold onto something you can’t rightly use or barter away?? 🤔
Love Shack describes the memory exactly when I was a sophomore in high school I worked at a local amusement park and every Monday the park was closed and since I was a young kid and I didn't have my driver's license I would go with the "Carney's" every Monday and this one older girl had her driver's license and she had a huge convertible and she would take us to Lake Arrowhead for the day and we would have a blast and it was just like they said in Love Shack got me a Chrysler it's as big as a whale!
First the snow…then my imagination of where Uriel slept last night. He’s a fascinating free spirit, living by his own code. I appreciate your summary at the end about his “walk” and how far he’s (not) going. I’m impressed with his happiness and jolly belief about the universal exchange.
One of the interesting things about him is that he really is pretty physically tough, having grown up hunting in the mountains, then working in the commercial fishery, etc. He really does have this cheerful, go-with-it attitude about living outdoors, even in the city and I never once heard him complain. Except about ticket Nazis...
Frankie X flew in for the weekend ignoring EVERY warning sign about the blizzard! He had to fly back to Columbus, Ohio and he barley made it to LaGuardia before they shut it down...LaGuardia BEFORE the renovations. And he had to sleep outside the security gate with the bums. Luckily Au Bon Pain stayed open for the privileged brat. Naturally, I was involved texting him all night as he m-effed everything and everyone....BUT himself....I was working 3rd shift that night so I had a hospital full of patients and a needy, dumbass, son, crying the blues every 5 minutes. Like they say, where there's toke there's fire!! Romance, Anne???!
I could never keep up with the likes of Uriel, JRB!

Wisdom
doesn't sound near as smart when you break it down to whiz dumb though
Never thought of THAT!!! LOL!!!
No one seems concerned about his super glued eye. Did it look injured? After hearing his story, I wish him well and can confirm I prefer to be housed.
He didn't really get stabbed in the eye, Liz. He does have a scar maybe a half inch under his eye, and it seems to have healed up just fine.
I also prefer being housed, especially during a blizzard.
That got me thinking I wonder if Popeye got stabbed in the eye?

They are called LEWIS STRUCTURES!
Named after Gilbert N. Lewis, an American physical chemist who introduced the concept in his 1916 article, "The Atom and the Molecule".

What an amazing coincidence that the back cover of the book had an illo of you pondering your Substack. Very meta!
"Alas, there are no new paid subscribers to thank this week."
You know the reason don't you??!! In a hissy-fit because he couldn't get Greenland,Trump put a 50% tariff on all Substack subscriptions!!

Hi Beth! Uriel's situation (or at least what he shared with me) also left me feeling a bunch of things.
Hopefully I can keep in touch and provide an update in the next issue. He should be someplace warmer soon!
