I forwarded your Tolstoy facts to the War And Peace in 7 Years podcast, and they did a shout out for you too last month! Love that you’re getting more attention!
I'm just here to say how Cafe Anne delights me. I live a million miles from New York, in Auckland, New Zealand, and haven't set foot in your city since the 90s. The first time I went there in the 80s I went up to the observation floor in one of the long-lost twin towers and marveled at the sight of helicopters flying round below me. In my experience then, watching a chopper required looking up.
Anyhoo, thanks for these doses of good cheer, Anne. They always make me smile, even though I don't know the streets and landmarks you're talking about. You're an ace reporter with a keen eye for a good story. I used to edit magazines and you almost prompt me to try the same kinda idea in my own city. But I also know how much energy this takes on a regular basis!
Meanwhile, am I your most distant fan – at 8828 miles and 19 hours' flying time? Air New Zealand is starting a direct flight between our two places at the end of this year which will take a mere 17 hours or so. Maybe it's time I came again!
How delightful to get your note Lindsey! Thank you! And yes I think you must be the furthest away reader because I think you can't get any further than that. I just did a little calculation out of curiosity, though, and it turns exactly a third of CAFÉ ANNE subscribers live outside the US. I think interest in NYC and Brooklyn is just universal.
And yes you are WAY overdue for a return visit! :)
I think I need to run for mayor of NYC. I'm sure Eric Adams is great (or awful) depending on your politics. But here's the thing. I REALLY want a job where I can crush dirt bikes, learn to jet-ski, post my drumming lessons on TikTok, and work out of a secret office. What will it take to make this happen?
I can already see my platform coming together! Thinking I'll go with either Billy Joel's New York State of Mind or New York Groove by Ace Frehley for my campaign song. Unless, that is, either one of those artists calls me out for coopting their song for my political purposes; I hate it when politicians do that.
I saw the drawing on the hood of the Kia and literally yelled "IS THAT SHERITA?!" very loudly, and I'm glad I'm working from home today, because that would take a lot of explaining to coworkers otherwise. (And after checking, I see now that it was NOT Sherita. But maybe it was a cousin of hers?)
Thanks for the shoutout Anne to my Newsletter. I hope someone downloads the wastewater PDF for kids coloring book. Love the abandoned BMW, especially the improvised pen holder. I bet if this were in NJ on the Turnpike, they'd have the pens attached to long strings like the days of filling station bathoom keys attached to large chunks of wood. This BMW couldn't survive in my community b/c I am sure there is a strict statute enforced by Scandinavians to ensure order. Even when there is a deluge of snow, cars get towed out of snowbanks here. I am guessing if I search (which I will) there is a very sanitized and orderly index of public art here. As for your Mayor, as I've said before, guys like him (and Jesse Ventura) make politics fun. Congratulations on approaching minimum wage compensation.
Thank you Mark! I feel like a lot of people are growing tired of the shenanigans, but I'm with you on the Mayor. When no one's allowed to have any fun, the terrorists have won. Or something like that!
We'd all be better off it people just lightened up a bit. I don't think I've ever seen a profile of a terrorist who seemed to be fun so I guess you are right :)
Oh golly. Prospect Heights really is a safe and lovely (and very cool!) neighborhood. But I’m sorry hear you’re feeling worried about your family living there. That sounds difficult. Maybe reading the NY Post isn’t helping…it’s not exactly aiming to present a balanced and accurate portrayal of city life.

Oh wow that's great! Thank you Liz!!
I love Eric Adams watch!
Thank you! If you love "Eric Adams Watch" you're REALLY going to love "Meredith Watch"!
Love that more and more people are discovering your awesome ‘stack. So happy for you!
Thank you Courtney!!!

BMW = Brooklyn Messages Wanted
😂😂😂
I like you’re thinking!
Er. YOUR
Tell it to the Germans!
Brooklyn Nachrichten Gesucht
"....like an egg falling from the nest, it’s gaining momentum...."
Considering the ultimate fate of the egg, I'm not sure this is a good analogy.
Haha-entirely intentional. Careful what you wish for!
I can't explain why but it reminded me of Donald Barthelme:
"As flowers are drawn to the florist, women are drawn to men who are not good for them"
I really love this BMW message board story! The story you imagined was good, but as always, truth is stranger than fiction!
ALWAYS

If Kathryn Garcia were mayor, everything would be more boring except that there would be MORE news about wastewater
This is why I think my candidacy has a chance -- clearly nyc voters have a good sense of humor.
LOL SO TRUE
Michael, I'd love it if you ran for Mayor, even though you live in LA. Mayor Adams actually lived in NJ (some say) but that didn't stop him!

LOL so funny Monica. I'm taking a closer look now. Sherita's cousin for sure. The resemblance is uncanny!
