Only ANNE could make women playing football interesting. Aka TOUCHDOWN.

Though I think it was Adrienne who was interesting!

It took me a couple days to get to reading this, I thought I wasn’t interested in a football story or women playing football. But I was wrong! Thank you Anne for pushing me to learn about things outside of my zone of familiarity.

This story also makes me think of Billie Jean King turning away from her passion towards baseball when she went to her first professional game as a kid and didn’t see any women playing. It helps me understand why representation is important.

So glad to hear this Jennifer! I get it, as I don't really care about sports or women in sports, or anything related to that. I can't even say why I was drawn to this story, but was so glad that I did because I got to meet Adrienne. Also, very interesting to learn about Billy Jean King—I didn't know about that aspect of her story. Imagine if she hadn't gone for tennis. Life is funny.

I really enjoyed reading the interview with you, particularly the part where you talk about how you felt on your way home from finding yourself in "the basement of a random apartment building in Queens, watching a bunch of strange men karate each other" 😍

Ha thanks! It was fun to be interviewed for a change!

Adrienne Smith sounds incredible! With any luck, Eric Adams will read this story and put her in his administration. I was also glad to hear about Smithson Michael. I had no idea jello could be used as bait, but then again, I'm not much of a fisherman. One final thought. I think we need some reporting on this man's breakfast, time permitting. I'm curious to know what they're reading, what they're eating, and which problems they're planning to solve!

Right? What do us city slickers know about carp bait?

And good golly I never thought about crashing the men's breakfast. What a great story that would be. You are the best!!!!

Bravo Adrienne! While we're on the subject of football, has anyone joined the "East River Pirates" at the dive-bar under the Williamsburg Bridge, the East River Bar, to watch live-streaming of FC St. Pauli, the premier anti-fascist "football" club in the world? Investigate and do a review, Anne!

I just checked out the site. Super interesting! Thanks for the tip!

Anne everything you do is so off-beat and interesting. You are the champion of "eclecticism", if that's a word!

Nice to decide to read Substack again and find this in my inbox. The Men's Breakfast photo is fantastic! While you are focusing on the outlandish goals of the get-together, my idea is a collage of perhaps five photos when taken together explain why men have a shorter lifespan than women. The football interview was fascinating. It is not often that an NFL receiver is interviewed and decides to sprinkle in ephemeral.

Mark I just saw your newsletter is back and happy to see that! I'd love to see that photo collage...
