Thank you so much for including in us. And I promise I was not giving the finger lol it's my way of how I grab the bags🥲 . There's nothing g but lo e here ❤️
LOL I was wondering Trisha! I am glad you were not, but it'd have been pretty funny if you were, especially given what you said about people coming in to mess with the neighborhoo. Hoping to visit again soon. I am still thinking about how good the pizza is!
Well, after hearing about the Pizza (as well as the other attractions of Staten Island) I am determined to take the ferry over and come visit next time I’m in NYC!
I was hoping for a Cafe Anne deep dive into the Ganas commune. It needs to happen! I'm so happy you have Lucy on board to create some original art for the newsletter; a nice change from the six-finger weirdness.
Believe me I've tried to do a story on Ganas, Rob, I'm sure it'd be fascinating! But no go. They've gotten a lot of bad press over the years so I don't blame them.
It's so unfortunate that one bad egg caused so much bad press for Ganas. I have only positives to say about them. The headset of most adults does not include the communal sharing of resources and the creativity it can make room for.
Dang. That pizza place sounds whackadoo in the BEST way. I want to know their whole menu. I'm a sucker for a weird pizza. And the restaurant run by grandmothers? Umm. Can you just do a whole story on them? Because I find that FASCINATING!
There is this man called Lenny who has a warehouse in Staten Island full of metal sculptures that he creates from scraps and junkyard metals. He makes life-sized transformers, vehicles, helicopters, all kinds of crazy things. I interviewed him maybe 10 years ago. I think he’s still there! Called Lenny’s Creations.
Ooh, I was hoping you would stumble on one of the commune spots, and you did! Yay! Also very excited for the Cafe Anne After Dark™️ retelling of the forbidden sex shop story 👀
I follow the Staten Island Ferryhawks on Facebook funnily enough, as I discovered them from some YouTube videos of days out there. Looks like a fun club.
Ha, that pizza shop is right down the street from where I live. Our street used to be lined with artists but right now I’m the only one left here. The thing about Staten Island is that every one has a car so you don’t have to live near the ferry. But if you want to meet more artists a good place to go is snug harbor. (Accessible by bus) There is an art school there, several galleries and museums and artists studios. Come by our open studio event on Saturday may 3!
Thanks for the tip Mary! I have been Snug Harbor but just to visit the Chinese Scholar's Garden, which was so great. Early May would be such a nice time of year to return!
I love that you climbed around hilly Staten Island to gather these stories. Your persistence in seeking out and sharing them is appreciated! I imagine you could write a modern day "Odessa" of your epic trials and triumphs in reporting on this city. What current figure could you use as a jumping off point to represent the Cyclops? Sirens? Scylla? Maybe you could find a way to include the ever inspiring Eric Adams? I look forward to the Whip Chips pop-up in the meantime!
Back in the early 70s, the next door community of Stapleton was promoted as Stapleton Village with a row of shops on Bay Street selling art, antiques, a health food store, plant store, etc. I spent many happy hours there and the storekeepers became friends. Sadly an artist who had headlined the movement was held up at gunpoint and it all went downhill.
Ooooh nooos! It'd be interesting to continue along Bay Street now, Sharon, and see if there's anything left of that. But wow, we're talking 50 years ago aren't we.

I hope you do Laura! NYC is not complete without SI!
1000%!!!
🥰 your very welcome and anytime 😊. One of our pizza guys recently made a chicken Frances deep dish pie and it was soooo good.
Trish, i was wondering if that was possibly a raccoon on your shirt?
Lol nooo it's a misfits tee i distressed. I got it from Charlotte Russe
ah, thanks! and sorry for the typo in your name above!
I'm fixing this in the story too
"Really nice people, and then you'll see a sadistic clown on a bicycle."
🤣 quote of the week!
Yeah I had some questions about that.

Forgot to mention that the Ganas store Everything Goes is a winner for the unusual and inexpensive.

There is a baked ziti pizza, Justin, topped with penne, cheese and tomato sauce. In case regular pizza does not have enough carbs for you!
I'm drooling.
Lol we have to be whacky to keep up with the whacky lol

Found it!

Everything made from recycled car parts. What a nut! Thanks for the lead, Jenna!
Yes! That’s it!
Ooh, I was hoping you would stumble on one of the commune spots, and you did! Yay! Also very excited for the Cafe Anne After Dark™️ retelling of the forbidden sex shop story 👀
CAFÉ ANNE After Dark! Now that I've launched it, I wonder if I can unlaunch it?!?
“I looked around for about seven hours. No, three days.” 🤣🤣
The details that you perfectly preserve in your posts, Anne, make all the difference ❤️🔥
And I LOVE it when readers notice these little details and point them out, Amy!
"let me accommodate you to the door" is SUCH a wonderful phrase. No way I';m not f\going to steal it.
Lol I had such a hard time coming up with it and I wrote it like 5 times ot was supposed to be bigger but I ran out of poster board lol
Right? I can think of so many situations in which that might come in very handy, David!

I totally need to do a story about the FerryHawks, Alan! It's been on my idea list for a couple years now!
*Lucy Stafford, casually painting masterpieces*
That's right!!! I'm so excited about this! We're already working on the next issue together.
What about "Chip n' Whip?" Also, I'm gonna need to hear the wacky sex story offline so I can regret it immediately.
Oh Phoebe, you really will be sorry!
Marshmallow and Italian rainbow cookie pizza - no thanks. . .
Don't knock it til you've tried it Bill.
Anne, have you always lived in the great NYC? Any other states? 🙏🏻
Nick I've been New York State only. First Buffalo then NYC. And have no desire whatsoever to extend my horizons further. :)

Anita, I feel that our amazing Mayor Adams is perhaps Cyclops, Sirens and Scylla all in one.
Okay, I admit, I had to look up Scylla. Good one!
And thanks for your kind words!

Can't be but damn it it is, but I am not old.
