This was a really good Eric Adams Watch. It was difficult to choose my favorite, actually. On the one hand, the mayor citing a terrorist attack and a new business opening as two of the many examples of a typical day in the big apple was next-level. But I went with the mayor disavowing his own book because the first one seemed like a flub any politician could make, whereas the book thing seemed specific to Eric Adams.
Way way back in high school, I did a paper on Albert Einstein. He mentioned that clothes were basically worthy of no thought. He had 7 suits, all the same. The light came on. Since then, blue denim pants, black pocket T-shirt with white tube socks. In 55 years it has served me well. Sure makes things simple, and black for sure with obvious reasons. Best of luck with yours!
“This is a place where every day you wake up, you could experience everything from a plane crashing into our Trade Center to a person who is celebrating a new business that’s open!”
no mas mayor adams we beg of you there is a vacancy in your very soul
oh btw that sandwich aint THAT big no doubt Aharon wudda made short work of it just sayin'
I swear it's bigger than it looked in the photo, AK. Aharon declined my offer of the remainder, but my little brother came by this week for lunch and went to town on it and there's still 3/8ths remaining.
Pronoia. Woah. Beside that I am always eager to expand my vocabulary (thanks for this word), this is a fantastic way of thinking, life philosophy or call it what you want, to practice every day. For some, it might seem crazy - but being negastive all the time as so many do, is not less crazier, either...
Money: I always have tons of coins on me, because I sing in the streets. So, my special and very unique purse for the half kilogram change is guess what: an empty plastic refill pack for instant coffee.
When I take it out to pay with it somewhere, the ladies at the cashier love it!
How hilarious those money stories are!!
Uniform: I used to wear a lot of black too - not this much, though. Until I learned that it's only certain personality types that can wear black anytime and anywhere, all the others will feel and look old, heavy, sick, sad, etc. That's regardless of one's natural colors of skin, eyes, hair. Since I have adopted this styling knowledge, I indeed feel and look younger, lighter, brighter, etc. My secondary personality type does allow black, so that explains my 2 favorite, almost unifor dresses, beside all the bright colors that I have.
I agree Andrea between paranoid and pronoid I'd pick pronoid any day of the week.
I am very curious about your singing in the streets—I know you mentioned being a busker in a previous note. Can we catch on the streets of NYC? Since you referred to kilos rather than pounds I supppose not.
Its true not everyone looks good in all black. It's actually not so flattering for my complexion. I look a lot better in blues and grays. But I FEEL better in black and I'm hoping that somehow makes me LOOK better too.
ooh love ask dan the librarian feature! i don't currently have a book question but i'm sure i can think one up eventually. with planning to move to a new place in the summer, i took the time to actually examine all my books and think about re-read/sentimental value...and managed to prune about 20! leaving 233 behind, sure, but it was something!
as the servant of an 8lb white maltese/chihuahua, and wearing a lot of black, i basically just ignore the pet hair at this point. doesn't help that even if i switched to other colors, i've got the dark gray cat to show up on all my white clothes, lol.
I think ten percent is a pretty good cull rate Megan, given how painful it can be to lose a book friend. The nice thing about donating books, however, is knowing someone else gets to read the book. I don't always feel so positive when donating old clothes.
To bring it all together, I recently donated an old duffle bag (black of course) to Goodwill and was horrified upon dropping it off to realize it was covered with white Minnie fur. Didn't have my lint roller with me but hopefully they have the means to deal with this sort of thing.
TGIM because we get a Café Anne newsletter! An absolute delight, from the title complete with ‘finger quotes’, down to the very last word: Schipperke! Already a fan of the new Ask A Librarian feature. Thank you for the photo of the sandwich, that bread will haunt my dreams.
Rebecca I love the word "Schipperke" too! The fact that it refers to a dog breed only makes it that much better. And so glad you enjoyed "Dan the Librarian." I'm hoping to get lots (or even just a few) more questions for our expert.
Thank you for your kind words! I'll save you part of the sandwich!
As always, the best part of my work week is stealing some time to read your newsletter, Anne. You do realize that you have jinxed yourself with this one: "unless I happen to get sweaty or spill something, and that is not likely as I am a very cool lady." 😎
I had the same thought as Tina because my cat is orange and white. You'll have to teach me how to use a lint brush because I've never seen Minnie's hair on you!
Actually, it's not a lint brush—they are fairly useless. I use a lint-roller with sticky tear-off tape. I estimate roughly three trees are felled each year for the sake of keeping me (relatively) fur-free.
When Dan says that the digital copy of the book costs more for libraries, it can be A LOT more, ten or more times as much. For a big city library like Brooklyn that's why there aren't as many copies of a popular title, but for a smaller library, with a tiny budget, just imagine.
If you are reading on a Kindle, or another dedicated reading device, you can download your title, then put the device into airplane mode. The title then won't auto-magically be returned until you re-connect to wi-fi. You can then take your time reading. You can also return the book using a computer or phone, making it available sooner to other library users, while still having it on your Kindle.
Srsly, who wants to pay $70 for the latest Danielle Steel--esque book? That's why the library doesn't have enough copies. And that was a few years ago, prob more now.
Wait -- only one pair of the boots? I've read that shoes are supposed to rest for a day or so after you wear them, and that it's a good idea to switch up heel heights. (Yes, I am obsessed with this uniform topic!)
Hmmm! Nancy, I have a backup pair of the same boots in my closet. Maybe I should swap them in every other day? I DO feel like my boots get worn out awfully fast.
When I am finally able to focus on CAFE ANNE full time, one thing I want to do is open an store full of absolutely absurd products that no one will ever buy. Adding this to the list, Amie!
The 9-11 reference is one of the wildest things anyone said in 2023…and some SHIT was said last year.
Haha so true Caroline! And here's to more in 2024 !
Finger crossed!!!

I agree Mr. Estrin. Any of us could blurt out something along the lines of the first, but the second is CLASSIC Eric Adams!
🤣

55 years! That is fantastic Bradd. And unlike mine, your uniform will never get discontinued!
Quite a contrast in sartorial strategy between you and Adams. Has there ever been a politician famous for wearing the same outfit?
Oh wow I didn't consider that, David that Mr. Adams is my fashion opposite.
I believe Barak Obama, while president, famously wore either a grey suit or a navy blue suit and always with a red tie.
I also just found this, about the former mayor of Coquitlam, B.C., in Canada:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/coquitlam-richard-stewart-suit-1.3459469
Love that mayor.
This is all delightful; thank you!
I'm wondering if we should 'cross the streams' and inquire about Dan the Librarian's wardrobe?! (LOL)
So funny! I will definitely ask, and include his response in the next issue, Daniel!
Matching the dog to the uniform is next-level!
It just occurred to me that there's no reason I can't take Minnie in for a dye-job...

Anne, indeed no chance to meet in NYC in the near future- unless I get invited to some well-paid gid... I live in Europe, you are correct.
In this post, you can watch a 14min documentary film about me singing in the streets of Budapest, there are also scenes in one of the most magnificient places of Hungary: https://andreagerak.substack.com/p/tiszta-szivbol-dokumentumfilm-from
People say it's very beautiful and moving, enjoy 🙂
Yes, with wearing colors (or clothes in general), the most important is the feeling!
Thank you Andrea!

I am spilling coffee down my front as we speak, Debra!
Maybe Mayor Adams is the one who needs to take a mental acuity test.
I had to look up "acuity" Robert, so maybe I am the one who needs the test!
"Acuity" is the word that Trump uses about this so maybe it's actually me who needs to take the test.

Ha! I think that's the key. I'm too stingy with the tear-off tape.

Where can I order the Anne Kadet-branded lint brush??
OMG this made me laugh so hard just now.
